FAQ

Is CertBuilder available for other Operating Systems than Windows?
Not currently, but only because of perceived lack of demand. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of CertBuilder for Linux, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Why is there no GUI? I expect Windows programs to have GUIs.
Two reasons. Firstly, it is easier to generate large numbers of certificates from a program that is driven from a command line, so that CertBuilder can be called from inside a script. Secondly (and more pragmatically) we are making CertBuilder available only because several vendors of PacketCable devices have expressed frustration at trying to generate compliant certificates using freely-available tools. It would have taken longer than it was worth to create a fancy GUI for CertBuilder.

Why do I need CertBuilder? Why can't I just use something like OpenSSL to generate my certificates?
The short answer is that you don't need CertBuilder, and you can use something like OpenSSL to generate your certificates. However, some of the certificates used in PacketCable and CableHome have characteristics that apparently cannot be easily generated with freeware packages. Even some very expensive packages can generate fully-compliant certificates only with difficulty. Several vendors have shared their frustration with us concerning their inability to generate compliant certificates for themselves using freeware or inexpensive packages. CertBuilder makes it possible to generate compliant certificates easily and quickly. An additional capability provided by CertBuilder that is unavailable in other packages is that, since it was specifically written for PacketCable/CableHome applications, the generated certificates are automatically checked for full compliance against the details of the specifications.

Why doesn't CertBuilder have capability xxx?
Probably because we didn't think that there was a need for it. Let us know the details of xxx, and we'll see if we can add the feature for you (most likely at no charge).
